Student of the Month – September 2016

Congratulations to Harutyun, the first 2016-2017 ACES Student of the Month! In feedback to ACES, Harutyun told us he believes social diversity is important because “it makes the world more beautiful.” He has been a shining example of this philosophy since he arrived.

In the few months Harutyun has been in America, he has truly enriched his community. His host mother let us know of the musical talents he shares, saying “the house is never without a song with Harut here—whether it’s him singing, playing the guitar or the piano, or playing music on his iPhone, there is always a song to be heard.” Only a month after arriving, Harutyun was also fearless enough to bring these gifts to the stage—performing in a school talent show on homecoming week. Harutyun is also athletically talented, and plays soccer for his school team (where he has scored many times)!

Harutyun stands out not just for his talents, but also for his attitude. He is always eager to extend his gratitude to those around him. In his student feedback, Harutyun repeatedly expresses appreciation for his host family and exchange sibling, saying (as one example of many) “they are such great host parents and host siblings who are really nice for having me. I’ll do my best for them.”

Harutyun doesn’t stop at just saying “thank you”; he also makes sure to use his time to give back to others. He has prepared a full Armenian barbeque dinner for his host family to enjoy, and volunteers multiple nights a week at church and in his community. His coordinator notes that he is kind and caring, always making sure others are happy and comfortable, but also challenging others to learn about the world around them.

Thanks, Harutyun, for being a great cultural ambassador. We are lucky to have you here!
