Student of the Month – September 2017

Winner: Boikemelo from South Africa

Boikemelo, nicknamed Kemi, has enthusiastically jumped right into life here in the US! While she was nervous about fitting in at first, she has adjusted quickly and says “Yes” to every opportunity that comes her way. As a result, she has taken ownership of her experience in the US.

Kemi has enjoyed sharing her culture and the history of South Africa with her host family. On South African Heritage Day, she dressed in traditional clothing and made a traditional meal including pap, a type of porridge, and chakalaka, a spicy tomato bean dish. Her host family has loved having her with them and say that “Kemi is always looking for ways to help out and be an active family member.”

In her first months in the US, Kemi has completed 17 hours of community service. She volunteered at the Wings of Angels Walk, helping raise money for terminally ill children, and also helped out at the International Peace Day Festival. At school, Kemi is doing fantastic; she is earning straight A’s, is on the tennis team, and is involved in Key Club.

Keep up the good work Kemi; your smile and positive attitude make everyone around you proud!

Runner-Up: Nurmat from Kyrgyzstan

Nurmat is a kind young man who is making the most of his time here in the US so far. He volunteers 3 days a week tutoring kids at the local library. He helped organize and decorate the library for a haunted house Halloween event. Nurmat is also in the Chess Club at school and teaches chess to kids. He is looking forward to playing soccer for the school team. According to his Local Coordinator, Nurmat “is always wanting to help and learn everything he can while he is here.” Nurmat, thank you for your kindness and helping hand, we really appreciate it!
