Program Description

This program provides teachers from preschool through high school levels the opportunity to improve their English skills and learn more about the American educational system, teaching methods and materials, and way of life, while sharing knowledge of their home country with Americans. Teachers are placed in a host school according to their interests and teaching background. In the host school, teachers participate in classroom and administrative activities, school extracurricular activities, as well as teach American students and teachers aspects of their own culture. Participants live with host families, allowing them the unique opportunity to learn more about American ways of life by being part of an American family.

Host Families

Host families go through an application process that includes a detailed application form, references, and interview conducted by an ACES Local Coordinator. Host families are from different socio-economic backgrounds and live in urban, suburban and rural areas. All have the desire to invite a foreign teacher to become a member of the family for the duration of the program and to share the American way of life with the teacher.

Host Schools

All schools in which a foreign teacher is placed are fully accredited and desire to increase the cross-cultural learning for their students, faculty and staff by welcoming a foreign teacher to their school. Teachers are expected to become an asset to the school by serving as a resource for cross-cultural learning and to participate in school activities both as a way to broaden their own experiences in the United States as well as to become an integrated part of the school community thereby allowing for more cross-cultural interaction with American students, educators and others.

Local Coordinators

The program has trained individuals in each community in which a teacher is placed who serve as the Local Coordinator. The Local Coordinator is responsible for placing the teacher with an appropriate host family, making arrangements for the teacher at the school, and dealing with any issues or problems as they arise.
